SALT, SMOKE & SULPHOUR
- DANAKIL & ERTA ALE, ETHIOPIA
Dates 2020 - TBA
Ethiopia is one of Africa's most beautiful countries and its landscapes are epic in both scale and beauty. And you will be touched by its beauty, history and people.
MAG is going for a new area and will take you so close that you can see the orange bubbling lava. As we are getting closer to the top of the volcano, you will see the dark night sky lighting up. Next on our list will be sulphurous mounds of yellow building surreal shapes and salt lakes that lay 116 m below sea level. In fact it’s so surreal that it doesn’t feel like part of earth at all. The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest and inhospitably places they say. We want to see it ourselves! All in one trip: volcano, salt lakes and sulphurous hills.... definitely not to be missed!
**Note: this trip is adjacent to our other Ethiopia trip (Jerusalem of Africa) and can be combined to 2 in 1.

We will arrive in Mekelle in the morning, take some time to relax and explore the town and market; finishing the day with a nice meal in a traditional Ethiopian restaurant. Next morning we will be picked up and start our journey to visit the Afdera salt lake, at 103 m below sea level, it is one of the lowest lakes in the world. We will visit also salines and watch the works going on to produce salt - turning back the time.
Next day we continue towards the active volcano. In the late afternoon we hike up Erta Ale volcano. At night we will go the last few meters to watch the bubbling volcano and its colourful activities. We will spend the night camping close to the volcano.
Next morning we will descend to be greeted by our breakfast and will drive further to Danakil. We will camp another night close to Asebo, where we will watch how the salt will be mined and the camel caravans loaded.
